Travel experiences: Best road

Our family of six has been on many road trips. Our favorite was a short one. With a 6,5,2 and pregnant mother (me), we headed south from Seattle and hit Kelso, past the Oregon border and then up to Long Beach, WA. This trip was fun because we hit several destinations all in just two days.

We were heading to Kelso for that good old family reunion. I had the cooler packed with snacks and goodies that was in reach of everyone in the van. We had brought plenty of games and activities for the kids to keep busy. We were going to see Mt. St. Helens before we drove further south and met up with the rest of the family.

We arrived at the ominous volcano and it was beautiful! I had not been there in years and my husband and kids had never seen it before. Watching them explore was one thing that made this the best road trip. There was steam escaping from a dome near the center of the volcano and the kids were just in awe by that. It was the middle of summer and the weather was perfect and you could see for miles.

We reached our hotel in Kelso and had dinner with my husband’s Aunt. It is always nice to visit family on a trip. Especially ones you don’t see too often. The next day was the reunion and we saw everyone. It was special and the weather was still wonderful! Food, family and games. What more can you ask for?

The next day we drove down to the Oregon border and headed west for Highway 101, the absolute best drive on the West Coast. We drove over a huge bridge as we made out way back into Washington State. It was quite an adventure for the kids to be in another state, even if it was only for an hour or so. We continued up the highway and reached Long Beach, WA.

Again, it was a place I’d been to a few times before, but a place no one else in our family had seen. We drove onto the beach and had a picnic while watching all the kite flyers. The ocean waves were crashing constantly on the beach and were good size too. We buried the kids up to their necks in the sand and they ran out into the ocean with their Dad to rinse off.

It was a nice and relaxing drive home as we had made a small circle across Southern Washington State. Those are the best road trips: fun, lots to do and a nice relaxing drive home. Until another, better road trip comes along, I’d say this was the best one by far.
